I do love photographing children. They have this honesty and innocence that is only with them for a short time of their lives. They have dreams and aspirations that may be big or small but are still so possible. They may give me a hard time about sitting for the camera for a few minutes, but I don’t mind because that is who they are.
My own kids are currently 6 and 2 and I probably take the camera out at least once a week to try and get that one beautiful portrait of the two of them, neatly dressed, sitting politely or maybe with their arms around each other smiling for the camera. I am still trying to get that image of my girls. In the meantime, I have settled for a few really awesome pictures of my girls to frame and hang in my living room. These photos aren’t those perfect smiles that I was thinking I was going to get, but each one really displays my little girls personalities and the dynamic between the two, and so I really love these photos even though they aren’t what I originally had in mind. They captured something in an instant that I will never get to relive with either of my children.
Even so, I will never stop taking my camera out to shoot them and trying to capture new moments, simple as these moments may be. After all, they are only little once.
